Lelia Beatrice Carr was born January 15, 1884 in Santa Fe where her father William Spencer Carr, was chief clerk for New Mexico Governor Lew Wallace. He worked at the old Governor's Palace there in Santa Fe. In 1906 Lelia had come to work as a teacher of the children on the ranch belonging to Charles Elliot Blattman at Mora, New Mexico. Lelia had come to the ranch from Denver where she had gone to school. Five years later, on the 15th of February 1911 she married Charles' eldest son and one of her former students, Thomas Blattman. At the time of their marriage Thomas was 20 and Lelia was 27 year old.
